早年經歷
凱斯·厄本在紐西蘭出生，在澳大利亞長大，因為父親酷愛美國的鄉村音樂，所以厄本從小耳濡目染。他6歲時開始學習吉他，7歲決定要去發展，8歲開始在各種少兒音樂比賽中獲獎。12歲在當地的俱樂部組建了自己的樂隊，15歲輟學並開始流浪。
1980年代後期，凱斯去了納什維爾旅行，並開始與多位音樂人合作，但同時開始接觸。之後，他和家鄉的夥伴彼得·克拉克、傑瑞·弗勞爾斯組建了the ranch樂隊。1998年，樂隊解散，厄本開始單飛。

厄本與妮可2006年6月25日，凱斯·厄本與澳大利亞女演員在澳大利亞悉尼的曼力鎮舉行婚禮。2008年7月7日，女兒桑迪·羅斯·基德曼·厄本出生。2010年12月28日，兩人通過別人代孕的方式獲得二女兒菲斯·瑪格麗特·基德曼·厄本。
戒除毒酒癮
2000年，凱斯·厄本進入戒毒所進行了戒除古柯鹼毒癮的治療。
2006年10月，凱斯·厄本的酒癮發作，隨後他便進入加利福利亞的貝蒂·福特勒戒中心進行戒酒治療，為期三個月。
